This can be caused by a few things:
Hard water: Minerals in hard water can prevent detergent from lathering and cleaning effectively. Try using a water softener or a bit more detergent.
Overloading the washer: Clothes need room to agitate and rinse.
Using too much detergent: Excess soap can’t be rinsed away, leaving a sticky film that actually traps dirt.
- Liquid Detergent: Effective on greasy and oily stains, and it dissolves easily in all water temperatures. Great for pre-treating stains.
- Powder Detergent: Excellent at lifting out ground-in dirt, mud, and clay stains. It often contains brighteners and is generally the most affordable option. Best in warm water to ensure it dissolves fully.
- Pods/Packs: Pre-measured, convenient, and mess-free. They contain a combination of detergent, stain remover, and brightener. They must be used in the correct load size and placed in the drum first, before adding clothes.
This is one of the most common mistakes. Use less than you think! Most people over-pour. Follow the measuring guidelines on your detergent’s bottle or box, and adjust based on:
Water hardness: If you have hard water, you might need a bit more detergent.
Load size: Small, medium, or large.
Soil level: Lightly, normally, or heavily soiled clothes.
Absolutely. Modern detergents are formulated to work excellently in cold water (and many are marketed as such). Cold water saves energy, prevents colors from fading, and is better for setting certain stains like blood. It’s effective for most everyday laundry.
